Always a popular spot to take out of town visitors... Be sure to try their famous Chicken Pesto (but bring your appetite!). Besides the food, the views are a feast for the senses as well - besides the roses and the incredible views of the hops-filled valley, the lavender along their driveway is growing like crazy - makes a great impression on the approach to the venue!

They may be slow in Sedgefield, but they are no slouches.... their Wild Oats Community Farmers' Market and Scarab Village Market have been going for years and are always popular - but in the last year they've stepped things up a notch since the Outeniqua Farmers' Market in George got going - and they've added a new section between the two markets with even more foodstalls and crafts. Lauren's Deli Eatery in George (see Tripadvisor reviews) comes well-recommended and have a stall there. We had a couple of the the rather non-traditional prawn falafels which were pretty tasty (with a wasabi-mayo dressing, lettuce and pickled ginger) before doing the rounds in the markets and the nursery. Check them out the next time you're looking for a bit of an outing on the other side of Wilderness. See the Farm Stalls & Craft Markets section of this website for opening times and more info. After finishing up the Oystercatcher Trail trip, we took a couple of the other hikers out to see the Swartberg Pass and Prince Albert (after a quick drive through Oudtshoorn), coming back via the scenic Meiringspoort route (recently re-opened after torrential rains about 2 weeks ago). I was concentrating on driving, not taking photos - the steep, windy gravel road up the Swartberg pass is worth it for the breath-taking scenery as is the circuit through Meiringspoort. Well worth it if you are at loose ends for a day.
UPDATE JANUARY 2015: Unfortunately, Poppy Gift Shoppe is closing it's retail shop (it will continue to sell to the trade and online) - and that means the coffee shop and little nursery in the back have also closed. You'll find the Poppy Gift Shoppe on Long Street in the same neck of the woods as the Peperboom Restaurant, more or less opposite the pop-up tourist info caravan and the public library. Watch for the giant fabric-wrapped tree on your left as you enter the village. The nursery is great - and getting bigger by the day - whether you're a guest in the area and thinking of bringing a little gift to your host or a resident looking for just the right thing for the garden. And you'll find cosy tables tucked away in all corners if you're looking for tea, coffee or a bite. Here are some photos of the nursery/kwekery and tea garden: The Outeniqua Farmers' Market in George is wildly busy this season - and for good reason: it's a great place to check out some local arts, crafts, hear some live music, buy your groceries (fresh produce, cheese, dairy - you name it), a plant from the onsite nursery and grab a lekker bite to eat (check out the quiches and savoury croissants at my favourite, French Connexion but get there early, as they are the "real thing" created by Steff and Emmy Aufschneider - see this article from the George Herald for more info). The market is open on Sundays during the holiday season - it's a bit quieter than Saturdays if crowds aren't your thing.
See the Farm Stalls & Craft Markets section of this website for more details, including location. Enjoyed a nice Valentine's dinner at the Transkaroo (had the Lamb Neck, of course) on Thursday, followed by a special "post-Valentine's" evening at Leila's Arms (Facebook and TripAdvisor) in George on Friday evening (had the Spinach Pie starter and Venison Pot main - both great). Excellent vocal entertainment from Voldi George, Petronel Baard and surprise guest attraction Johnny Apple (who, word has it, is off to the States where he has a recording contract). Johnny Apple stole the show - quite the amazing talent at just 15 years old! Best get to Leila's Arms quick if you haven't done so already as Gabrielle has her place on the market - sad for us that it may not be around for much longer.
[Note: Leila's subsequently moved - with Gaby and Nontosi re-opening as "Leila's Up-cycled" at Prince Vincent's Square on York Street (next to the Dros) in George on September 1, 2013. Call 044 870 0292 for reservations or more info] |
